Science Congress news

Science Congress is a platform provided to our aspiring scientists to come up with well researched, innovative ideas. The students have an opportunity to present these pioneering projects in the form of talks or exhibits in 8 different categories. It is an activity that enables students to learn, understand and look at science in an enjoyable manner from different perspectives. The activity generates a lot of interest amongst many members of the school who also look at it as a way to enhance their oratorical skills, as many do not get other chance to address an audience. In addition it boosts the participants' confidence and self-esteem as they begin to believe that they have the capability to address a large group of people.

A team of 13 extremely qualified and very able adjudicators, led by the proficient guidance of our chief adjudicator Prof. S.M. Uppal identified 2 potential projects in each category. These two projects are to proceed to the Zonal Level which is to be held on 11th March 2010 at Eastleigh High School.

The programme for the day was as follows:-

1. 7.30 - 8.30 - exhibits and charts were being displayed and put up.

2. 9.00 - judging commenced after the welcoming addresses from the Headmaster, Mr. D'Cruz, Deputy Headmaster, Mr. Banerjee and Club Patron, Mrs. Taneja.

3. 12:30 - 2.30 - judges were compiling the results for various categories. This was followed by lunch for all dignitaries and teachers.

4. 3.00 - the long awaited prize giving ceremony began.

We are taking 32 well prepared entries to the Zonal Level and hope to do very well with these projects. We wish to keep up the high standards and maintain the good name of the school.

We also excel in Middle School Model United Nations- MSMUN

Model United Nations or Model UN is a simulation of the United Nations that aims at educating student- participants on civics, effective communication, globalization and multilateral diplomacy. Students takek on roles as foreign diplomats and participate in a simulated session of an Inter Governmental Organization (IGO). To act the diplomats' role, participants research on a country, take on roles as diplomats, investigate international issues, debate, deliberate, consult, and then develop solutions to world problems in what the student diplomats call a resolution.

In addition, sole national organizations such as the United States National Security Council are often simulated, with delegates role-playing specific people say, the Secretary of State or the Secretary of Defense rather than representing countries. This is taken one step further, having the delegate represent merely the interests of his/her office, or role-play a specific holder of the office.

This Model UN, often run using basic parliamentary procedures allow all student delegates to be active participants. Common activities in the MSMUN involved giving speeches to the committee and writing resolutions concerning a given topic. At the end of the conferences, awards are given to individual delegates, delegations, or both, in case of a merger. The judging of this varies but in general, delegates are given points for every action they perform, which are added. At the end of the conference, awards are given to the highest point scorer as spelt out by the resolution quality.

This year, our students are no less ambitious in the programme and as a testament to their hunger for excellency and claiming a lion's share in the program, the school got has registered 11 countries and 55 students, already!and a 44 delegates membership, 11 delegations, each delegation made of 4 students headed by a coordinator reverently referred to as the Ambassador. These delegates are training continuously throughout this first term and the first few weeks of term two. The exercise will culminate in their attending a 5 exciting and enriching days conference at the UN Headquarters at Gigiri, here in Nairobi late January 2010

Here here some of the glorious moments we had.

Judges Remarks

The overall view and feeling was more than satisfactory as the students put up performances that were full of energy, innovation and creativity.

All eight scripts presented were well written and presented. However the following points were noted by the judges that the House Masters should take note of for future activities.

Ø Some of the scripts were too long they lost their plot and impact. The scripts should be read and edited accordingly by the housemasters.

Ø The performances and overall presentation definitely had the possibility of getting better if the participants had started preparing earlier and used their time effectively.

Ø There were a few 'acting wrongs' seen on the stage by most of the actors. These basic rules of acting, the ABC (Acting, Brains and Commonsense)was barely implemented. Although the students were offered the help of Mr. Desai to help polish up their performances, due to poor time management, none of the houses took this up.

Ø All houses lost considerable marks for stage management. The backstage helpers seemed uncoordinated and the change of scenes took too long. This is another factor that the Housemasters should try and work on.

On the whole however, all the judges were very happy and full of praises for all the participants for a great presentation. A combined effort of good script writing, directing and acting definitely showed on stage.

Well done!!!

Middle School Model United Nations 2009

The 16th MSMUN is here with us and this year,we will be representing 11 countries late in January at the UN headquarters, Gigiri, Nairobi. We acknowledge that ours is the only school with 11 countries while the second school, closest to us, has 8 countries! Again, we are the only school that secured 4 head securitaries. Note that the MSMUN program has gained popularity and the competition for delegate, ambassador, and all positions have turned out to be cut-throat. However, OAN Junior high braced herself and we expect 60-plus students to take part in the event.

And news just in is that our middle school Model United Nations' Chair students have done extremely well. We secured 100% pass in the securitaries and and 3 chairs. Results for EA MUN and our prestigious press corps are yet to come in.
